How Nest is helping to bring Aaron closer to his family

Article by The Nest Team

Aaron McMahon has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. He currently lives in a two-bedroom supported living apartment in North Parramatta. With two nephews, one niece and another baby on the way in his family, Aaron is starting to think about moving closer to his siblings.

Aaron’s two sisters live with their families in Campbelltown. His nephews are four and one and his niece is just over one year old. As their uncle and a self-described ‘family man’, Aaron wants to be closer to his sisters so that he can make their little ones his priority and spend more time with them – something that is a little difficult with him being on the other side of Sydney at the moment.

Aaron first moved out of home at the age of 20 as he wanted to become more independent. He has lived in a number of different properties and now is thinking of moving again.

Initially, I was trying to get on my two feet, because when I looked at the situation, I said to myself "my parents, they ain't gonna be around for much longer"... As it is now, my dad's already gone. I've only got my mum left, so it was probably a good decision at the time.

When it came to looking for accommodation in the past, Aaron feels that sometimes he didn’t have time to really consider where he wanted to live or what he wanted in a home.

My current place just sort of came up. At that particular time, I didn't really have much time to think, "Is this what I really want?". I didn't have much time to think for myself "what am I going to gain from this, what am I going lose?" I didn't get much time to weigh it up. It’s quite hard when you don't get that much time to weigh the pros and cons... I think it's important to see what's going to come out of it and what's not going to work. That was the disadvantage I had because I didn't get that much time.

Now thanks to Nest, Aaron can begin his search for a suitable property in the area he wants to live while also considering and thinking about all the features he wants in a home.

First of all, I'm going to need the proper ramps. What I'm going to need first and foremost is accessibility. Stuff like that. I'm going to need bathroom modifications and all of that for my personal needs because otherwise if it's not properly modified how am I going to be comfortable.

Aaron has already setup and completed his Nest profile. He's started to look for properties near Campbelltown that will meet his support and funding requirements as well as the features he wants in a home, such as a ceiling hoist, mobility ramps and bathroom adjustments.

Aaron is confident he will find his next home with Nest!
